Ukraine halted natural gas imports from Russia on Wednesday after energy officials from the two countries failed to agree on quarterly prices, state transport monopoly Ukrtransgaz said.

"From today, Ukraine is not getting gas from Russia. Transit supplies are as normal," Ukrtransgaz spokesman Maksim Belyavsky said, referring to gas that crosses Ukraine to Europe.

Talks in Vienna between Russia and Ukraine on gas supplies fell apart on Tuesday, June 30.

Russia has proposed keeping prices unchanged from the second quarter at USD 247 per 1,000 cubic metres with a discount of around per 1,000 cubic metres. Kyiv wants better terms.

Ukrainian state energy firm Naftogaz said after Tuesday's talks that it would stop buying gas from Russia until new terms had been agreed.
